Welcome back!

When I go into the Facebook group, it’s hard to believe that it’s ONLY the second week of DBP, because wow. You’re in motion. You’re connecting. You’re sharing like you’ve known each other forever. Oh, the kindness! The courage! The momentum! Thank you for bravely posting your writing and taking the time to read others’ stories. This group is already what it is because of YOU!

Before we dig in, some biz as usual:

“Will there always be weekly prompts?”

One of you asked this. This month, yes, so we can get into the rhythm of reflecting, writing, and sharing. In Feb? Yes. But some will be action-oriented, like getting a Substack or Google Doc folder set up, structuring an outline, etc.

In March, my hope is you’ll be writing pieces based on your personal outline, but it will also depend. I’m guessing there will be a few different options for you to make your own.

No matter what, I will send weekly emails of encouragement, tips, or one-off prompts based on trends and wins! We’ll just see how it flows, yeah? Please don’t hesitate to send me your ideas or preferences as well.

BE SURE TO SHARE

After you do the prompt, I encourage you to share it in our private group. Post a pic of your journal, link to a G Doc, or copy and paste it into a stand-alone post. (Note: You can always share directly with me via email. Always.)

AN INCENTIVE

If you share every prompt this month, your name will be added to a drawing for complimentary coaching/editing on one of your February pieces.

Let’s hear it for all who completed the first prompt within the first week:

Holly - 👏
Jodi - 👏
Stacy - 👏
AnaGloria - 👏
Ashley - 👏
Jamie - 👏
Heather - 👏
Christin - 👏
Hannah - 👏

And if you haven’t just yet — NO SWEAT! You can catch up any time before the month’s end.

OUR FIRST OPEN MIC

It’s looking like a weekday call ain’t in the cards for some, so be sure to check the poll in the Facebook group or let me know which of these work for you:

🎤 Fri, Jan 31 at 6pm MST
🎤 Sat, Feb 1 at 10am MST

This will be a 90-minute virtual gathering to share something from the month: read a ditty you wrote (whether you already shared it or not) or share a story about your writing (a personal win, AHA moment, or something you’re even struggling with). We’ll have open discussion at the end as well.

OK.

SO.

I don’t know about you, but as I’ve watched countless people lose their homes, schools, businesses, and favorite places in California, I keep thinking about my own home and how it would feel to lose it so suddenly. I keep wondering what I’d pack in my “go bag,” how I’d feel in the process of that, and what it’d actually feel like to see my house go up in flames.

When I watch videos of people returning to what are now piles of ash, I’m just gutted for them. I’m there with them.

While I don’t know what that exact situation feels like, I certainly know what it’s like to lose something. We all know what it’s like to have people, places, and things disappear from our present lives. Whether slowly or suddenly, the loss always stings.

But you know what always remains?

The memories.

That brings me to this week’s prompt…
